Adding Insulation

While you could invest in a high-efficiency heating system, insulating your home is a more cost-effective way to heat your home more efficiently. Homes that are properly insulated will also get more benefit and energy savings from a new system.  Make sure your home has adequate insulation before you install a new heater.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

Do you forget to turn down your thermostat when you leave the house during the day? Installing a programmable thermostat helps you do that without having to remember. You can program the thermostat according to your schedule, and it will automatically set back the heating system when you leave for the day and turn it up again when you get home.

Close Fireplace Dampers

Is there an unused fireplace in your home? Unless the chimney is being used to vent a furnace or gas log insert, close the damper inside the flue. You could be losing a lot of heat and money through your chimney.

Remember to Change Air Filters

Routine maintenance and professional tune-ups are also energy savers, since they ensure that your heater is running efficiently. Changing or cleaning air filters often will also ensure that your heating system is working as efficiently as possible. Dirty air filters don’t allow for proper airflow and, therefore, reduce efficiency.
